The Green Umbrella
ABOUT US:
The Green Umbrella: NY Youth for a Just and Sustainable Future is a network of young people in New York State that is working to harness our collective power to solve the climate crisis by building thriving, just, and sustainable communities. We are redefining the borders of our campuses and are committed to mobilizing young people to protect New York State from hydrofracking and to demand 100% clean energy and a green economy that works for everyone. We strive to empower and train young people to become leaders in the climate justice movement and change agents in their communities.
WHERE WE've COME FROM:
Last April, over 900 New York youth joined 10,000 young people from every corner of the US for Power Shift 2011 in Washington, DC. At the capitol, we told President Obama that our generation isn’t waiting around for our future to be handed to us, and we went Capitol Hill–and the Department of the Interior– to show what democracy looks like. When we left DC we had strategized, organized and come together into the Green Umbrella, the NY youth climate justice network that’s led the unprecedented surge of youth climate action in NY State.
Since April 2011, hundreds of young New Yorkers have taken action against Big Oil and Gas. In August, over 50 New York youth joined the historic Tar Sands Action sit-in in Washington, DC. In November hundreds traveled to DC hold President Obama to his campaign promise–“to end the tyranny of oil”–and we blocked the Keystone XL pipeline. When the fight turned to fracking in the Delaware River Basin, we teamed up with Josh Fox, Food & Water Watch, 350.org and frontline activists from New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware to protect 15 million people’s water and score a huge win in the movement to ban fracking. Since Power Shift 2011, we’ve been winning. Now, we’re taking movement back to the fight for our future in New York at Power Shift NY.
